Confusion, doubt and ignorance are very powerful feelings. These feelings can motivate us to be more to understand more but more often than not they are used against us by thous who want to control us.  They use our confusion about a subject to bend us to there way of seeing things, strip away our own perception of things and replace it with there own.  This tactic has to be employed with the ignorant or misinformed because (although contrary to some s belief) the truth is not as easily twisted as perception is.  The subject of this my most recent look into the way that people take advantage of peoples confusion is the holy trinity.  I was at work the other day and on the floor there was a pamflit from the watchtower bible and tract society (Jehovah witness church) that said” should you believe in the trinity?”.  The premise for this tract is the theology of the holy trinity, the understanding that God the father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are all separate but equal personalities of the one true living God. the Jehovah Witness do not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ and this is there attempt to take advantage of peoples general confusion or misinformation on the subject to bring them into there wa of thinking.  As i began to read this tract out of curiosity i was taken aback by the slyness of the propaganda.  The tract first approaches you as a impartial informer first asking “Do you believe in the Trinity?” simply asking that question will weed out anyone who there views will have no affect on and leave them with the confused or the doubters.  The next step they take is to “explain” what the Trinity is to those who dont know, in essence there ideal target.  For the part of there explanation they dont actually do to bad of a job of describing the basic belief behind the Trinity.  However that is how the best propaganda works present the most basic version of truth and then mount a complain to distort it the best you can. A great example of this is the very first quot that they use from scripture “eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”  immediately they create a separation between God and Jesus in the mind of the reader, the full statement though creates a different feeling though, “This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.  I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you have given me to do. Now, father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which i had with You before the world was.” John 17: 3-5. The difference is that one version although acurit but imcompleat creates distance between God and Jesus, the other in its entirely creates a unity between Jesus and God. The first page of the tract then continues to explain the Trinity in a friendly none combative manner, all the while making passive aggressive jabs at the idea.  About three quarters of the way down the first page this statement is made “If the trinity is true, it is degrading to Jesus to say that he was never equal to God as part of the Godhead. But if the Trinity is false, it is degrading to Almighty God to call anyone his equal, and even worse to call mary the Mother of God.”  the point of making this statement is not in what is said but in how it is said. The more impersonal Jesus is used as opposed to Jesus Christ (as is done thought the new testament) and the more imposing and impressive Almighty God is used to stir up a sence of reverence towards one and not the other and stir up fear.  The idea of not believing in Jesus Christ as God is contrary to the ability to being part of the christian faith or calling yourself a christian (as the Jehovah witnesses claim). The definition if a christian is someone who has a relationship with Christ,  “Christians are those who accept Christ as God.” The tract then goes on to present the idea of any confusion about the mysteries of God as being unnatural and out of place.  They site that people and theologians alike find the Trinity to be ” confusing, contrary to normal reason, unlike anything in there experiance.” but that is not entirely true if you take a good look at the world around you the first example that comes to mind is H20, water can be a liquid, a vapor or a solid and in all three states it is still H2o.  Even though this is a simplistic example of what is am talking about it is valid. Then there is of course  the concept of peoples reasoning and what they have seen in there experience, at one time the world was thought to be flat and any notion of it being otherwise was beyond the comprehension of the general public or even most scholars but we know now that the world is round and any belief to the contrary is just ridiculous.  So human understanding on the biases if experience is an ever developing idea, so what is to stop your confusion about a subject like the Trinity from bringing you to an understanding of it as truth by studying and praying about it.  The tract then goes on to site examples of educated men who gave up on trying to understand it saying that is was to great a mystery, to discourage the reader from trying themselves.  They further elevate the confusion in those who are already confused and create an even greater feeling of doubt in the doubters, it is at this point that they begin to go on the offensive….. I will be continuing the other half of this post next week i didnt realize how wrapped up in this subject i would get untill I started it now i have to see it through as throughly as possible.
